Two New Bills

S1253; The proposed legislation seeks to fulfill the Government’s compelling interest in protecting children from exposure to harmful material online, and from begin groomed by the use of the material into sexual exploitation, abuse, and sex trafficking, while not overburdening Free Speech. This is accomplished by requiring manufacturers of smartphones and tablets to enable existing filters for Idaho’s children. The bill is in its third reading and should come up for a vote soon.

S1289; The Children’s School and Library protection Act requires public schools and community libraries to take reasonable steps in restricting children’s access to obscene or harmful material as defined by Idaho Code § 18-1514. Public School and Community Libraries will be required to establish a Material Review Committee to review requests for relocation. This bill was just introduced and will be working its way through committee.
